Sadolin Classic Exterior Woodstain
Crown Paints Ltd

Sadolin
Classic

Low To Medium Build, Semi-Transparent Woodstain

USES
Low to medium build exterior woodstain (Ref BS EN 927-1 1997) for providing protection to timber substrates such as cladding, fascias, soffits, fencing, exterior decking and garden timbers or as a base stain prior to the application of higher build finishes on joinery. Classic may also be used to provide a stain for interior timbers prior to the application of a protective finish. Classic should not be used alone as a finish for hardwood timbers.
COMPOSITION
Alkyd resin dissolved in white spirit.
PROPERTIES
Weather resistant and washable, providing a variable sheen finish dependent on the surface which is being coated.

Timber surface must be abraded, clean and dry, with dust, dirt, wax and grease removed. Mould and algal growth must be eradicated using a suitable fungicide/algicide. The moisture content of the timber must not exceed 18 percent, and for best results moisture content should be no higher than 15 percent. This figure will be 14 percent or lower for interior timbers. Degrease timber surface by wiping with a cloth dampened with cellulose thinners or equivalent. Any hard crystallised resin at the surface of the timber should be removed with a scraper Remaining resinous residues may be removed using methylated spirit. We do not recommend the use of "knotting agents", which are not always fully effective in "sealing in" resin. In addition, the presence of knots is often highlighted, and adhesion of subsequent coatings can be impaired.

For timbers deemed to be Durability Class 4 (slightly durable) or Class 5 (not durable) reference BS EN 350-2 : 1994, a preservative pre-treatment with Sadolin New Base (THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED AND REPLACED BY SADOLIN WOOD PRESERVER AND SADOLIN QUICK DRYING WOOD PRESERVER - AN UPDATED TECHNICAL DATA SHEET HAS NOT YET BEEN ISSUED BY AKZO NOBEL WOODCARE - NOV 1999) or similar approved brush applied preservative is recommended. To achieve maximum protection, preservative application by double vacuum impregnation or time controlled immersion, in accordance with the appropriate regulation is preferred. Preservative pre-treatments must be fully dry before the application of Sadolin Classic.
APPLICATION
Apply two coats with a good quality brush in a full flowing coat (working well into joints, and ensuring end grains or sawn timbers are saturated with product). Excess surface material should be redistributed after 5-20 minutes (depending on conditions), using a dry brush and the minimum number of strokes required to produce an even overall colour. The brush should be periodically cleaned with a dry cloth. Pay special attention to tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of cills.

When Classic is used as a base stain prior to the application of a higher build finish such as Sadolin Extra only one coat is required.

Ensure application all round components prior to installation. Avoid overbrushing as this will cause brush marks and a poor quality finish.

Classic is supplied ready for use and should not be thinned.

Only use non-rusting screws, nails and fixings.

Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise colour variations may be experienced.
APPLICATION CONDITIONS
Avoid applying when there is a risk of rain or when temperature falls below 5 deg. C.
COVERAGE
10 - 14 m2/litre on planed hardwood timber 7 - 12 m2/litre on planed softwood timber, and 4 - 8 m2/litre on rough sawn softwood timber this will vary depending upon the method of application, timber species, moisture content, timber cut, and the presence of other coatings.
DRYING TIME
12-24 hours depending upon absorption and drying conditions. Certain hardwoods are often rich in natural oils, that can seriously affect the drying, absorption and adhesion of all finishes. These must be removed by wiping the surfaces with a cloth dampened with cellulose thinners or equivalent. Due to lower air movement, interior drying times may be extended.
CLEANING
Brushes should be cleaned immediately after use with white spirit.

MAINTENANCE

Mould and algal growth must be eradicated using a suitable fungicide/algicide. Apply a further coat of Classic as described in the Application section. Two coats will be necessary if the finish has become heavily eroded.

If excessive weathering has occurred leaving a grey appearance, the surface must be abraded back to clean bare timber before recoating.
