Sadolin
Extra

Medium to High Build, Semi-Transparent Woodstain.

USES
Medium to high build exterior Woodstain (Ref. BS EN 927-1 1997) for providing protection to timber substrates including all exterior softwood and hardwood joinery. Extra may also be applied as a maintenance treatment to existing joinery treated with Sadolin Classic. Extra is also suitable for interior softwood and hardwood joinery, but is not suitable for use on floors. Extra is not suitable for use with bitumen-based adhesives.
COMPOSITION
Alkyd resin dissolved in white spirit.
PROPERTIES
Weather resistant and washable, providing a semi-transparent, semi-gloss finish.
PREPARATION
Timber surfaces must be abraded, clean and dry, with dust, dirt, wax and grease removed. Mould and algal growth must be eradicated using a suitable fungicide algicide. The moisture content of the timber must not exceed 18 percent, and for best results moisture content would be no higher than 15 percent. This figure will be 14 percent or lower for interior timbers. Degrease timber surface by wiping with a cloth dampened with cellulose thinners or equivalent. Any hard crystallised resin on the surface of the timber should be removed with a scraper Remaining resinous residues may be removed using methylated spirits. We do not recommend the use of "knotting agents", which are not always fully effective in "sealing in" resin. In addition, the presence of knots is often highlighted, and adhesion of subsequent coatings can be impaired.

Where a superficial application of preservative to softwoods and hardwoods is deemed necessary, such as timbers in Durability Classes 4 or 5 (reference BS EN 351-1 1996), apply two coats of Sadolin New Base (NOTE: THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED AND REPLACED BY SADOLIN WOOD PRESERVER AND SADOLIN QUICK DRYING WOOD PRESERVER - AN UPDATED TECHNICAL DATA SHEET HAS NOT YET BEEN ISSUED BY AKZO NOBEL WOODCARE - NOV 1999) to saturation, paying particular attention to end grains, allowing 24 hours drying time between coats, and 24 to 72 hours before overcoating. Preservative pre-treatments must be fully dry before the application of Extra. For optimum durability apply a first coat of Sadolin Classic after the preservative. Timber treated with Classic should be allowed to dry for 12-24 hours before application of Extra.

Coating system durability can be improved by the use of end grain sealers.
APPLICATION
Extra should be applied to a wet him loading of 50-80 micrometers. Apply two coats with a good quality brush in a full flowing coat (working well into joints, and ensuring end grains or sawn timbers are saturated with product). Brush out sufficiently using the minimum number of strokes required to produce an even overall colour. Pay special attention to tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of cills.

Ensure application all round components prior to installation. Avoid overbrushing, as this will cause brush marks and a poor quality finish.

Extra is supplied ready for use and should only be thinned by up to 10 percent for use as an absorbent base coat. Where an even more absorbent base coat material is deemed necessary apply a first coat of Sadolin Classic and then continue to apply two coats of Extra as described above.

Only use non rusting screws, nails and fixings.

Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise colour variations may be experienced.
APPLICATION CONDITIONS
Avoid applying when there is a risk of rain or when temperature falls below 5 deg. C. or exceeds 30 deg C.
COVERAGE
12-15 m2/litre on planed timber 8 -12 m2/litre on rough-sawn timber, depending upon the method of application, timber species, moisture content, timber cut, and the presence of other coatings.
DRYING TIME
5 hours at 20 C. Allow at least 1 2-18 hours between coats. The drying time for certain colours may exceed this figure. Before overcoating with Quick Drying Varnish or other water borne finishes, 3-5 days drying time should be allowed. Due to lower air movement, interior drying times may be extended.
CLEANING
Brushes should be cleaned immediately after use with white spirit.
COMPATIBILITY
(NOTE: MANY OF THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS LISTED AS 'COMPATIBLE' HAVE BEEN DISCOUNTINUED - AN UPDATED TECHNICAL DATA SHEET FOR SADOLIN CLASSIC HAS NOT YET BEEN ISSUED BY AKZO NOBEL WOODCARE, YOU SHOULD CONSULT THE TECHNICAL DATA SHEETS FOR OTHER PRODUCTS FIRST, OR CONTACT DECORATING DIRECT FOR ADVICE - NOV 1999) Extra may be applied over Sadolin New Base and Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler, or Sadolin Classic. Extra is compatible with the following Sadolin products; Prestige, Rapid Woodstain, Holdex, Sadolac, Superdec and Supercoat. Data sheets are available on all other Sadolin products mentioned. Similar products to those mentioned above will also show good compatibility with Extra. For further advice on this refer to the manufacturers of such products, or contact us on the number given at the end of this data sheet.
GLAZING
The backs of beads, end grains and rebates should receive a liberal coat of Sadolin Extra.

Fix bead glazing in accordance with BS 8000-7 : 1990. We do not recommend the use of linseed oil putty or modified non setting compounds in conjunction with our wood protection systems as the long term performance of these compounds is inferior

To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material. Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of the finishing coats.

MAINTENANCE
Any loose material may be removed using a stiff (non-metallic) bristle brush. Wash with water and a mild detergent to achieve a clean surface. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely. This operation should be carried our immediately prior to the application of coatings. Mould and algal growth must be eradicated using a suitable fungicide algicide. Apply a further coat of Extra as described in the Application section. Two coats will be necessary if the finish has become heavily eroded.

If excessive weathering has occurred leaving a grey appearance, the surface must be abraded back to clean bare timber before recoating, using the full system application.
STORAGE
The can should be resealed after use and stored tightly closed to prevent evaporation and entry of oxygen. Avoid the inclusion of a greater proportion of air to the product. It should be noted that even if there is a higher proportion of product to air in the container, once opened the shelf life of the product cannot be predicted.
CAN SIZE
Extra is available in 0.5 litre, 1 litre. 2.5 litre, and 5 litre cans.
