Medium to High Build Water-borne Opaque Timber Protection

USES
Medium to high build water-borne opaque timber coating (Ref.: BS EN 927-1 :1997) for providing protection to timber substrates such as doors, window frames, cladding, fascias, and soffits. Superdec is suitable for use on interior timbers not subject to abrasion. Superdec is not suitable for use on floors.
COMPOSITION
Alkyd/acrylic resin blend dispersed in water.
PROPERTIES
Semi-gloss finish, which is weather resistant and washable.
PREPARATION
Timber surface must be abraded, clean and dry, with dust, dirt, wax and grease removed. Mould and algal growth must be eradicated using a suitable fungicide/algicide. The moisture content of the timber must not exceed 18 percent, and for best results moisture content should be no higher than 15 percent. Degrease timber surface by wiping with a cloth dampened with cellulose thinners or equivalent. Any hard crystallised resin at the surface of the timber should be removed with a scraper. Remaining resinous residues may be removed using methylated spirits. We do not recommend the use of "knotting agents", which are not always fully effective in "sealing in" resin. In addition, the adhesion of subsequent coatings can be impaired. When using light shades of Superdec on timbers where there is a risk of extractive discolouration, the use of a suitable blocking primer is advisable.

Where a superficial application of preservative to softwoods and hardwoods is deemed necessary, such as timbers in Durability Classes 4 or 5 (reference BS EN 351-1 : 1996), apply two coats of Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver to saturation, paying particular attention to end grains, allowing 24 hours drying time between coats, and before overcoating. Preservative pre-treatments must be fully dry before the application of Superdec. Do not use on substrates which have had water-repellent preservative pre-treatments applied.

Coating system durability can be improved by the use of end grain sealers.
APPLICATION
Superdec is a two coat system, however when white or pale colours are being applied over a black or dark substrate, a third coat may be necessary. The second coat should be applied as soon as possible after the first coat has dried but no sooner than 16 hours, in order to provide full protection. In any event this period should not extend beyond three months. If applied to exterior wood and the contract is of long duration, it is suggested that a further coat be applied prior to hand over to make good any weathering during the construction period. Apply two coats paying special attention to tops and bottoms of doors, undersides of cills and any areas of exposed end grain.

Product should be applied in a full flowing coat following the direction of the grain. Ensure application all round components prior to installation. Avoid overbrushing, as this will cause brush marks and a poor quality finish.

Superdec is supplied ready for use and should not be thinned.

Apply to a wet film thickness of 80-90 micrometers.

Only use non-rusting screws, nails and fixings.

Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced.
APPLICATION CONDITIONS
Avoid applying when there is a risk of rain or when temperature falls below 10 deg C. or exceeds 25 deg C.
COVERAGE
8 -10 m2/litre on planed timber, 6-8 m2/litre on rough sawn timber, this will vary depending upon the method of application, timber species, moisture content, timber cut and the presence of other coatings.
DRYING TIME
Touch dry in 1 hour at 20 deg C. and at relative humidity of 55 percent, and recoatable in 16 hours.
CLEANING
Brushes should be cleaned immediately after use with warm water.
COMPATIBILITY
Superdec may be applied over the following Sadolin products; Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver, Classic, Extra and Supercoat. Data sheets are available on all other Sadolin products mentioned. Similar products to those mentioned above will also show good compatibility with Superdec. For further advice on this refer to the manufacturers of such products, or contact us on the number given at the end of this data sheet.
GLAZING
The backs of beads, end grains and rebates should receive at least one coat of Sadolin Superdec.

Fix bead glazing in accordance with BS 8000-7 : 1990. We do not recommend the use of linseed oil putty or modified non setting compounds in conjunction with our wood protection systems as the long term performance of these compounds is inferior.

To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material. Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of the finishing coats.
MAINTENANCE
Any loose material may be removed using a stiff (non-metallic) bristle brush. Wash with water and a mild detergent to achieve a clean surface. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely. This operation should be carried out immediately prior to application of coatings. Mould and algal growth must be eradicated using a suitable fungicide/algicide. Apply a further coat of Superdec as described in the Application section. Two coats will be necessary if the finish has become heavily eroded or a colour change is required.

If excessive weathering has occurred giving a grey appearance, the surface must be abraded back to clean bare timber before recoating.
STORAGE
The can should be resealed after use and stored tightly closed to prevent evaporation and entry of oxygen. Avoid the inclusion of a greater proportion of air to the product. It should be noted that even if there is a higher proportion of product to air in the container, once opened the shelf life of the product is unpredictable. Superdec must not be exposed to frost.
CAN SIZES
Superdec is available in 1, 2.5 and 5 litre cans.
