Supercoat

High Solids Semi-Transparent Woodstain

USE
Medium to high build exterior woodstain (Ref. BS EN 927-1 : 1997) for providing protection to timber substrates such as joinery, cladding, fascias, fences and sheds).
COMPOSITION
Alkyd resin/natural fatty acids dissolved in white spirit. (Approximately 75 percent solids by volume with volatile organic compounds (v.o.c.) level of < 250 grams per litre).
PROPERTIES
Weather resistant and washable, providing a variable sheen finish dependent on the surface being coated and the number of coats applied. After a short period of weathering the sheen level of the finish will reduce.
PREPARATION
Timber surface must be sanded, clean and dry, with dust, dirt, wax and grease removed. Mould and algal growth must be eradicated using a suitable fungicide/algicide. The moisture content of the timber must not exceed 18 percent and for best results moisture content should be no higher than 15 percent. Degrease timber surface by wiping with a cloth dampened with cellulose thinners or methylated spirits. Any hard crystallised resin at the surface of the timber should be removed with a scraper. Remaining resinous residues may be removed using cellulose thinners or methylated spirits. We do not recommend the use of "knotting agents", which are not always fully effective in "sealing in" resin. In addition, the presence of knots is often highlighted, and adhesion of subsequent coatings can be impaired.

For timbers deemed to be a Durability Class 4 (slightly durable) or Class 5 (not durable), reference BS EN 350-2 : 1994, a preservative pre-treatment with Sadolin New Base (THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED AND REPLACED BY SADOLIN WOOD PRESERVER AND SADOLIN QUICK DRYING WOOD PRESERVER - AN UPDATED TECHNICAL DATA SHEET HAS NOT YET BEEN ISSUED BY AKZO NOBEL WOODCARE - NOV 1999) or similar approved brush applied preservative is recommended. To achieve maximum protection, preservative application by double vacuum impregnation or time controlled immersion, in accordance with the appropriate regulation, is preferable. Preservative pre-treatments must be fully dry before the application of Supercoat.
APPLICATION
Apply 1 -2 coats paying special attention to tops and bottoms of doors, undersides of cills and any areas of exposed end grain. Product should be applied in a full flowing coat following the direction of the grain. Ensure application all round components prior to installation. Avoid overbrushing, as this will cause brush marks and a poor quality finish.

Variable absorption and uneven texture within the timber (as is the case with highly weathered timbers) may result in colour and sheen variations, and although a single coat will give adequate protection to the timber, for a more even appearance two coats should be applied. On certain hardwoods the coarse texture of the timber may result in an uneven film formation This can be remedied by application of one coat of Sadolin Classic prior to the use of Supercoat.

Supercoat is supplied ready for use and should not be thinned.

Apply to a wet film thickness of 60-80 micrometers. If a two coat system is being used, apply each coat to a wet film thickness of 40-60 micrometers.

Only use non-rusting screws, nails and fixings.

Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced.
APPLICATION CONDITIONS
Avoid applying when there is a risk of rain or when temperature falls below 5 deg. C.
COVERAGE
12-15 m2/litre, on planed timber and 7-10 m2/litre on roughsawn timber This will vary depending upon the method of application, timber species, moisture content, timber cut and the presence of other coatings.
DRYING TIME
Touch dry in 5-7 hours at 20 deg. C. and a relative humidity of 65 percent, and recoatable between 16 and 24 hours. Certain hardwoods are often rich in natural oils that can seriously affect the drying. absorption and adhesion of all finishes. These must be removed by wiping the surfaces with a cloth dampened with cellulose thinners or methylated spirits.
CLEANING
Brushes should be cleaned immediately after use with white spirit.
COMPATIBILITY
(NOTE: MANY OF THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS LISTED AS 'COMPATIBLE' HAVE BEEN DISCOUNTINUED - AN UPDATED TECHNICAL DATA SHEET FOR SADOLIN CLASSIC HAS NOT YET BEEN ISSUED BY AKZO NOBEL WOODCARE, YOU SHOULD CONSULT THE TECHNICAL DATA SHEETS FOR OTHER PRODUCTS FIRST, OR CONTACT DECORATING DIRECT FOR ADVICE - NOV 1999) Supercoat may be applied as a maintenance coat over the following Sadolin products; Classic, Extra, Rapid and Prestige. Except for Classic, all the above products and Superdec may be used as a maintenance coat on Supercoat. Data sheets are available on all other Sadolin products mentioned. Similar products to those mentioned above will also show good compatibility with Supercoat. For further advice on this, refer to the manufacturers of such products, or call us on the number given at the end of this data sheet.
GLAZING
Joinery treated with Supercoat should be glazed with a suitable sealant in accordance with BS 8000 -7 : 1990.

Linseed oil putty, type II butyl mastics and metal casement putty are not recommended for use.

Consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing compound to ensure they are suitable for use with our products.
MAINTENANCE
Remove surface dust and dirt by washing. Any loose material may be removed using a stiff (non-metallic) bristle brush. If water and a mild detergent are necessary to remove any stubborn dirt, ensure that the timber is thoroughly rinsed and allowed to dry completely. Mould and algal growth must be eradicated using a suitable fungicide algicide. Apply a further coat of Supercoat as described in the Application section.

If excessive weathering has occurred giving a grey appearance, the surface must be sanded back to clean bare timber before recoating. Bare areas should then be touched in with a coat of Supercoat before applying a maintenance coat to the whole area.
STORAGE
The can should be resealed after use and stored tightly closed to prevent evaporation and entry of oxygen. Avoid the inclusion of a greater proportion of air to the product. It should be noted that even if there is a higher proportion of product to air in the container, once opened the shelf life of the product is unpredictable. In order to create a good seal the can may be shaken and inverted. This will introduce coating to the rim that may improve the seal. Supercoat must not be exposed to frost, and must not come into contact with sparks or flames.
CAN SIZES
Supercoat is available in 0.5 litre, 1 litre, 2.5 litre and 5 litre cans.
