Zinsser BIN Aerosol - Primer Sealer and Stain Killer
William Zinsser & Company Inc.

BIN Aerosol - Primer Sealer and Stain Killer

Spray BIN is a fast-drying flat white pigmented shellac undercoat. It is an aerosol version of BIN Primer-Sealer, the original product of this type which is applied by brush, roller or pressure sprayer. Spray BIN, like conventional BIN, performs three functions:
  • Primes white.
  • Seals off surfaces to provide a smooth base for the finish coat.
  • Kills troublesome stains.
The resin content of Spray BIN is 100 percent shellac. The propellant is a hydrocarbon. Spray BIN contains no fluorocarbon or vinyl chloride.

Color
Available in white only.

Finish
Flat white.

Where To Use

Spray BIN is suitable for all types of interior surfaces, either unfinished or previously painted. Its shellac base makes it an exceptional sealer for porous surfaces. It is ideal over old or new (but fully cured) plaster walls, dry wall, new or previously finished wood and plywood. Because of its unusual adhesion, it is recommended as a primer on dense, hard-to-grip surfaces such as Masonite, metal, glass and tile. Its stain-killing properties make it particularly well-suited for use over stained or varnished woodwork, new woodwork, new wood containing knots and sappy streaks, grease or smoke stains, water stains, and fire-damaged surfaces.
As a practical matter, Spray BIN is used instead of conventional BIN where the aerosol can save time or is more convenient to use. These applications fall into two general types:
  • As a complete undercoater when painting small objects such as picture frames, models, other arts & crafts projects, stools, benches, doll furniture, waste baskets, wrought iron.
  • As a handy aid on big jobs to spot prime and seal spackled areas, knots, stains, hard-to-reach places like corners of bookshelves and drawers or hard-to-paint pieces like chair rungs and joints or wicker.

How To Use

Allow can to come to room temperature before use. Shake to free agitator ball as directed on label. Apply to clean, dry surfaces only. Avoid applications in high humidity. Mask nearby objects. Test spray on scrap surfaces to determine touch and spray pattern. Spray with stroking motion, holding can 10 to 12 inches from object. Depress valve completely to insure full atomization. Avoid application in one spot to prevent sags and runs.
Clean Valve: When finished, turn can upside down. Press valve until only gas propellant escapes. This clears both the top tube and the valve for trouble-free use next time.
If Valve Clogs: If spray head stops or is irregular, particularly after prior use, twist off sprayhead and clean metering valve on valve stem. Clean sprayhole in sprayhead. Soaking in alcohol may be required as well as use of a fine needle to clear orifices. Reseat sprayhead firmly, taking care to turn orifice away from you to escape accidental release of spray.

Application Details

Spackled Areas. Where cracks or holes have been spackled, seal off with one or two coats of Spray BIN.
Sappy Streaks, Stains. Apply two coats of Spray BIN over most stains. Where severe "pinking" occurs (as with aniline stains) allow two hours drying time before applying the finish coat.
Glossy and Stained Woodwork. Spray BIN can be applied to previously painted gloss woodwork with no surface preparation (except wax removal), insuring a good bond between the original painted surface and the new finish. Where many coats of varnish have been applied to old wood-work, it is best to remove the old varnish, particularly in crazed or alligatored areas. An easy test to tell whether an old finish should be removed is to rub the edge of a worn coin, held at a 45 degree angle, along the surface with the grain a few times. If the finish tends to flake off or powder easily, removing the old varnish completely is recommended.
Metal, Glass, Ceramic and Plastic Tile. Metal pipes, ductwork, models, sculpture, and ornamented pieces; glass objects and mirrors; ceramic tile, tile board, plastic tile and tile baked on metal all present hard, non-porous surfaces which ordinary primers often won't adhere. The remarkable adhesion of shellac-based Spray BIN provides a "bonding" undercoat that's an excellent base for the finish coat.
Grease and Smoke Stains. Spray BIN provides a barrier coat for these stains, preventing them from discoloring or bleeding into the finish coat of paint. First dampen a clean cloth with tur-pentine or mineral spirits and wipe areas to remove excessive grease or oil; then apply Spray BIN.
Water Stains. Spray BIN will seal off discolored portions of ceilings and upper walls from leaks or condensed moisture. The source of moisture through ceiling or wall must be eliminated and surfaces allowed to dry thoroughly. Then cover the water-stained spots with Spray BIN. Finish with oil-base or latex paint. (Where staining from condensation in bathroom and shower areas is in-volved, oil-based paint rather than latex paint is recommended as the final coat. Moisture will permeate the latex paint and the BIN film as well, reactivating the old stain. Oil-base paint will serve as a barrier and prevent recurrence of such stains.)
Previously Finished Furniture. Spray BIN's remarkable adhesion and stainkilling properties recommend it for this applica-tion. Remove any wax with a good commercial wax remover, following the manufacturer's directions. Next, sand with fine sand-paper to remove any blisters, craters or other imperfections in the old finish. Dust. Then apply one coat of Spray BIN and allow to dry for 30 minutes. Apply finish coat or paint or enamel.
Unfinished Furniture. Remove any protective wax coating with a good commercial wax remover. Sand surface with fine sand-paper to remove any roughness, fingerprints, etc. Dust. Apply one coat of Spray BIN. Allow to dry 30 minutes. Sand lightly and dust. Apply finish coat of paint or enamel.
Children's Toys. Because of Spray BIN's pure shellac base and the absence of toxic pigments, it conforms to American Standard Z 266.1-1964 and can be used for refinishing children's toys, carts, bicycles, etc. The finish coat should be a non-toxic paint recommended for this end use.

Exterior Uses

Although Spray BIN is formulated for interior application, it can be used for such exterior jobs as:
Spot Sealing, Knots and Stains in New Wood. Two coats are recommended, followed by two coats of an exterior oil paint for maximum weathering.
Sealing Wood to be Puttied (such as window and storm sash). Spray BIN prevents oil in putty from penetrating wood, with subsequent cracking of the putty.
Sealing off Rust Stains and Streaks from screening, gutter, downspouts, TV antenna mounts, prior to application on finish exterior paint.
Priming exposed nailheads prior to painting.

Finishes for Use Over Spray BIN

Any aerosol paint or oil-based or latex (water emulsion) paint can be applied over Spray BIN. Exceptions: Do not apply polyurethanes or special highly alkaline acoustical or flock type coating over Spray BIN. Spray BIN can be used as an undercoat for lacquers except for use as a stain killer under lacquers containing a high percentage of alcohol. (The alcohol tends to soften the Spray BIN film and allow the stain to bleed into the lacquer finish.)

Surface Preparation

Surface must be clean and dry. Remove wax with mineral spirits or commercial wax remover. Allow to dry thoroughly. Scrape off loose or scaling paints and wallpaper paste. Fill wall cracks and nail holes with patching plaster; sand smooth when dry. Sand unfinished wood with fine sandpaper. Dust well. Remove rust on metal by sanding, then wipe down with mineral spirits or turpentine.

Drying Time

Dry to handle: 15 minutes. Dry ready for finish coat: 30 minutes. When used as a stain kill, allow two hours drying time if excessive "pinking" or bleeding occurs.

Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight, radia-tors. steam pipes and other heat sources. Exposure to heat or pro-longed exposure to sun may lead to bursting of thecontainer.
