Sadolin Ultra Highly Translucent WoodstainSadolin Ultra is a genuine low-maintenance, solvent-borne exterior woodstain system, which uses Sadolin's proven high solids, low solvent resin technology. It offers exceptional translucency and colour depth. Up to 7 years of protection (touch up maintenance at 3-4 year interval, and full redecoration at 6-7 year cycle depending on exposure). Its initial sheen level will vary from satin to semi-gloss depending on the texture and adsorption of the timber surface, this will weather to give a lower sheen level in 3-6 months.Sadolin have formulated this product to be 'highly translucent' by using much finer Iron Oxide pigments, similar to those used by the Sikkens Cetol range of woodstains. This is a first for Sadolin, who until now have used cheaper rare earth pigments which clump together and result in a slightly muddier woodstain which is less translucent. It's the 'pigment' part of any woodstain which provides the majority of UV protection, that's why clear non-pigmented finishes don't last as long on exterior timber. Sadolin have used their proven high solids/low solvent technology to give a higher film build with increased flexibility, whilst meeting future EU legislation on VOC emissions. They've also packed the formulation with transparent UV absorbers to increase UV protection whilst maintaining translucency. On new or bare timber: Sadolin recommend the following system; 1 coat Sadolin Ultra Basecoat (Clear) followed by 2 coats Sadolin Ultra. This is fine if you are using a very lightly pigmented colour such as Pine, Golden Maple or New Pine and wish to minimise any colour change. However if you are using any of the stronger pigmented colours we suggest you just use 3 coats of Sadolin Ultra and ignore the Clear Basecoat. You may be asking why? Well the reason is, that in our comparison tests, using 3 coats of Sadolin Ultra (darker pigmented colours - Walnut, Mahogany) directly onto pine, increased the perceived contrast in the grain of the timber, resulting in a more visible grain structure. Do your own tests if your not sure. We checked with Sadolin and they were happy with our suggestion, infact it appears that Sadolin Ultra Basecoat (Clear) uses the same resin formulation as Sadolin Ultra, with a slightly lower viscosity, and without any pigments. ![]() How does Sadolin Ultra stack up against Sikkens Cetol? We conducted comparison tests using the colours Walnut and Mahogany on bare pine, using 3 coats of Sadolin Ultra, versus a standard 3 coat Sikkens Cetol system (1 coat Cetol HLS, 2 coats Cetol Filter 7). In our opinion the resulting colours looked almost identical, but on depth of colour and translucency Sadolin Ultra looked considerably better. Although we can't quite believe we are saying this, Sadolin have pushed Sikkens into 2nd place when it comes to the translucency of Sadolin Ultra. (Note: its difficult to portray the increased depth of colour and translucency in the image above). On prepared previously woodstained surfaces (sound condition): Apply 1-2 coats of Sadolin Ultra. Coverage for each coat: Planed softwood/hardwood 12-15 square meters per litre. Touch dry in minimum of 5-7 hours, recoatable after a minimum of 18 hours. These times are based on a temperature of 20°C, normal relative humidity and good drying conditions. NOTE: Please refer to the technical data sheet for full product details. Sadolin Ultra is available in 16 ready mixed colours, in both 1 and 2.5 litre sizes.
