The very finest steel wool, specially graded and checked for quality. A substantially better product than those currently being imported from Europe and the Far East. Our graded steel wire wool is available in every grade from an Ultra Fine 0000 to Heavy coarse 5, and suitable for a multitude of tasks:
No. 0000 & 000 - For fine finishing, dulling gloss finishes, varnish abrasion between coats, cabinet work, for the final polish of copper pipe when using compression fittings on plumbing, etc.
No. 00 & 0 - For use instead of fine sandpaper, preparation work prior to varnishing, and general cleaning.
No. 1 & 2 - For general purpose work, cleaning of copper pipe and fittings, paint removal and preparation.
No. 3 - For removing rust, paint, varnish, and oxidization from copper pipes etc.
No. 4 & 5 - For removing rust, rubbing parquetry, preparation of rough surfaces and all coarse work.
On wood work and other industrial uses use the steel wire wool dry. For removing paint of varnish use with a paint remover. For general household work use the wool with soap and water as required. Note: Always wear protective gloves when using steel wool. Cut wool from the roll, never tear it. To prevent discolouration don't use on Oak.
Plumbers: Why Your Compression Joints Weep: The Synthetic Pad Flaw.
If your copper compression joints are weeping, the culprit isn't your torque - it’s how you prep the pipe before seating the olive. The Problem: Synthetic abrasive pads are embedded with sharp grit. Twisting them around soft copper leaves deep, microscopic score lines. These scratches act as tiny tunnels, allowing water to weep straight past the olive. The Solution: fine steel wool consists of long, smooth metal ribbons. It shears away oxidation without scratching, leaving a mirror-smooth finish for the olive to crush against. The Takeaway: Use synthetic pads or coarse steel wool for soldering where a scratched "key" helps. For mechanical fittings, always use a fine steel wool to get a flawless, metal-to-metal olive seal with zero plumbers paste required.
